Joker's Wild

Dear Alisa and Gina,

I go to the gym early in the morning, when there are very few people around. This one guy consistently tells off-color jokes to the other people (a small group of regulars) who are there at the same time. And though he never tells me these jokes directly, I always overhear them – because he’s very loud and obnoxious. I’d leave, but it’s the only room I exercise in. I don’t like hearing his jokes. Should I say something? ~ Not Laughing

Say, “Hey, this gym is rated PG. Didn’t they tell you that when you signed up?” A few more comments like that and he’ll probably get the message. If not, get very good earplugs. ~ Gina

I’m wondering what’s held you back from speaking up already? Do you think they’re going to laugh at you, ignore you or are you trying to keep your distance? Depending on how you respond to those questions, I think you’ll be able to figure out your response. You can speak up and risk connecting in a positive or negative way with these guys or you can keep quiet and try to pretend you’re not there. ~ Alisa
