Questions for Teacher

Dear Alisa and Gina,

My son (who is in elementary school) really likes his teacher this year – but I have some concerns about her teaching methods. How do I bring up questions and issues with the teacher without hurting my child’s developing relationship with her?

I believe it’s important to let the teacher know you are there on your own, not because of any issues your child may have voiced. Be clear too about your intentions. Are you trying to get the teacher to change or is your intent to gain an understanding of what’s going on without a pre-determined idea about right and wrong? If you can remain open to what the teacher has to say, I think you may lay the groundwork for a very good relationship for all of you. ~ Alisa

I have to say, I was so happy when I had a child in school, because finally I could reprimand the teacher. Alright, I’m just kidding, but the reality is teachers are used to being questioned by parents, and it’s certainly within your rights to raise concerns. A good teacher will be glad you did and will have good answers for you. ~ Gina
