Dear Alisa and Gina,
This is a pet peeve of mine. I like to read, and talk about books. Sometimes friends ask if they can borrow a book I’ve finished. I love it when my friends read the same books so we can discuss them, but many times I don’t get the book back – even if I ask for it. I don’t want to be stingy and say no, but at the same time books are expensive and I’d like to get them back. Right now three friends owe me books. ~ Literature Lady
Your sentiments are well worded and you have no obligation to lend books if it makes you uncomfortable. I think all you need to do is say what you said to us: “I love it when my friends read the same books so we can discuss them, but many times I don’t get the book back – even if I ask for it.” Tell that to the next person who wants to borrow a book. You’re taking care of yourself and your needs and that’s commendable. ~ Alisa
I hardly ever buy books – because I rarely read them more than once. (So many books, so little time.) Go to the library. Then you’ll never have to lend a book again. In fact, don’t lend anything you expect back. Remember what Shakespeare said? "Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend." ~ Gina
